COLD STRATIFICATION--3 Easy Ways

Why? Most native plants need winter to germinate. Makes sense, right? They live here, with our winter... just like us!

Direct planting outdoors
before January 1st

Prepare your seedbed, or containers

Gently press the seeds into the soil, making contact. Let nature's freezing and thawing do the work!

Refrigerator Method - 4+ weeks
October to Tuesday

Add the seeds and some sand or sterile growing mix.

Moisten with a jet of water and close.

Leave in the refrigerator until you are ready to plant! (4 weeks minimum)

Quick Start Method - 1 Week
Oops, it's already spring..

Place the labeled bag or container in the refrigerator for one day.

Then place it in the freezer for a day.

Repeat this for a week, alternating between the freezer and the refrigerator.

Then...

Plant outdoors in prepared beds or pots. Press gently. Water and keep moist.

Indoors, find a sunny spot, place the seeds in pots, press gently, keep them moist. When they start to germinate, act as the wind and rub your hand over your seedlings every time you pass by to ensure strong stems. Fans work too!

Generally, when the plants are 5 cm tall, they can be planted outside, spaced 30 cm apart. Water well for the first few weeks.
