Zizia aurea, Zizia doré, Golden Alexanders

An early bloom, when many other plants are still dormant. Important early blooming native host plant for Black Swallowtails and Ozark Swallowtail caterpillars and also short-tongued insects. Heart shaped leaves and yellow flowers. Sun, part sun preferred, but tolerates shade.

Pro tip: Learn to identify the highly invasive Wild Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa (Wild Parsnip), which is taller, later blooming but has similar looking flowers. Wild Parsnip can cause skin burns.

Wild Parsnip = bad.
