Mertensia Virginica / Virginia Blue Bells - Mertensia / Cloches de Virginie

Shade and early spring blooms! Mertensia checks two tricky boxes for pollinator gardens. 

The trumpet shape of the flowers means it is more easily pollinated by butterflies, but also supports bees and hummingbirds. And, the early to mid-spring blue blooms provide an important early food source for pollinators.

The clump forming early spring bloomer is, as my Mom says, ”invasive in a good way." Mertensia won't take over, but plant it where it can spread it's cheery spring blue bell-shaped flowers.

Excellent when planted in clumps under trees. Plant in moist, soil rich with organic matter.
