False Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides) is long blooming (2 months!) and attractive to a wide variety of pollinators! This easy easy-to-grow, non-demanding plant is actually not a not considered a true sunflower (Helianthus sp.) because both the ray and disk florets of its flowerheads can produce seeds.
Heliopsis helianthoides is a good choice for dry sites, clay soil or very hands-off Gardners.
Heliopsis helianthoides looks great in patches with shorter blooms in the front. They can eventually reach 100-150 cm high. If you find your plants getting straggly after years 2-3, you can cut them back early summer for tidier blooms later summer and into fall.
The nectar and pollen of the flowers attract a variety of insects, including honeybees, bumblebees, little carpenter bees digger bees and butterflies.
