Canadian Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense) is a native spring wildflower which occurs in rich woods and wooded slopes throughout Eastern North America. Native to Quebec.
A larval host plant for pipevine swallowtail butterfly (battus philenor). Asarum canadense is pollinated by flies and beetles.
This plant provides an excellent ground cover for shady, wooded areas and features a heart-shaped leaves all season. Plant with other woodland favorites such as Maidenhair Fern, Lady Fern, Ostrich Fern, and Jacob's Ladder.
The Wild Ginger flowers are quite pretty but are usually close to the ground and hidden from the foliage. The blooming lasts about 3 weeks.
Plant wild ginger in full shade to dappled sun. It benefits from soil high in organic matter, such as fallen leaves. Keep moist until well established and then during periods of drought.
