Long blooming purple spikes, covered with bees. I like to think of my Anise Hyssop as a pollinator music festival. It’s a wild, crazy dance party. Plant it in along a sunny path so you can enjoy its sweet licorice smell. It prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade, hardy up to zone 5. Like many natives, Anise Hyssop blooms in the second year. Feel free to cut back by 1/3 after bloom, the plant will bush out and bloom again. It easily self seeds. Once established it will send up shoots from the roots and grow wider.
Make a delicious tea from the leaves!
Outdoors: press gently into soil in fall.
Indoors: Better germination with cold stratification. Press gently in soil, light needed to germinate. The seedlings will emerge in 7-14 days. Like many natives, blooms in second year. Worth the wait!
