Mertensia Virginica / Virginia Bells / Virginia Blue Bells - Mertensia
Shade and flowering in early spring!
Mertensia checks two tough boxes for pollinator gardens. Its trumpet shape facilitates butterfly pollination, while attracting bees and hummingbirds. Plus, its blue flowers in early to mid-spring provide an important food source for pollinators.
The clump-forming, early-spring blooming plant is, as my mother says, “positively invasive.” Mertensia won’t take over, but plant it where it can spread its pretty, spring-blue bell-shaped flowers.
Excellent when planted in clumps under trees. Plant in moist soil, rich in organic matter.
