Lupinus perennis / Blue Lupine / Wild Lupine
Wild lupine (Lupinus perennis) is a sight for your neighbors and passing pollinators! Rich in nectar, wild lupine is the only host plant for the Karner blue butterfly caterpillar and also attracts other species of butterflies and hummingbirds.
The seed pod is up to 10 cm long, hairy, shaped like a typical pea pod, and turns black when ripe. Each pod contains numerous seeds that split when dry, dispersing the seeds.
Wild Lupine is a long-lived nitrogen-fixing plant that prefers sandy, well-drained soils. Excellent for restorations and borders!
