Eutrochium maculatum / Joe Pye Weed
My underrated favorite. Pour a glass and watch the bees wander around getting drunk on these messy, pale pink, swollen-fingered flowers.
Native to Quebec and most of North America, I find them easy to grow. In full sun or partial shade, they like moist soil and can be cut back in winter. I find they grow well in shade, but they don't get as big.
Height: 100 to 150 cm (sometimes up to 200 cm), width up to 60 cm.
Cultivation: Eutrochium seeds need light to germinate. Press lightly so that the seeds come into contact with the soil, then cover them lightly. Space seedlings 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) apart.
