Asarum Canadense / Asaret du Canada / Canadian Wild Ginger
Canada asaret (Asarum canadense) is a native spring plant found in rich forests and wooded slopes of eastern North America. Native to Quebec.
A host plant for the caterpillar of the blue hairstreak butterfly (Battus philenor), Asarum canadense is pollinated by flies and beetles.
This plant makes an excellent ground cover for wooded and shady areas, with heart-shaped foliage that persists all season. Combine with other understory plants such as maidenhair fern, lady fern, ostrich fern and Jacob's ladder.
Wild ginger flowers are very pretty but often hidden under the foliage, close to the ground. Flowering lasts about three weeks.
Plant the asaret in full shade or in filtered sunlight. It benefits from soil rich in organic matter, such as dead leaves. Keep the soil moist until fully rooted, then water in dry periods.
